LithiumBank completes bulk brine sampling in Alberta, advancing DLE tech toward a commercial feasibility decision
15 May 2026

Alberta's lithium brine sector moved a step closer to commercial reality in April 2026. Between March 21 and April 8, LithiumBank drew 150 cubic metres of formation water from deep oilfield reservoirs at its Boardwalk project in northwest Alberta. Those samples are now making their way through multiple laboratories for analysis.
Three technical programs are driving the effort. Long-cycle direct lithium extraction trials will test how LithiumBank's DLE technology holds up against actual Boardwalk brine chemistry under extended operating conditions. Reservoir mapping rounds out the program, producing hydrogeological data to model what a future commercial well network might look like.
Next stop: Calgary. The bulk brine will feed directly into LithiumBank's pilot plant, which launched in July 2024 and processes up to 10,000 litres per day, placing it among the largest DLE pilot facilities in North America. Until now, the plant ran on surrogate fluids. Using real project chemistry sharpens the feasibility inputs considerably.
The underlying opportunity is worth understanding. Alberta's oil and gas fields sit atop vast lithium resources dissolved in formation water, brine that producers currently treat as a nuisance byproduct. LithiumBank's model repurposes that waste stream, potentially recovering battery materials without the footprint of conventional mining. Federal and provincial support for DLE technology has grown sharply through 2025 and into 2026, adding institutional momentum to projects at this stage.
Significant uncertainties remain. Lithium carbonate prices have been volatile since 2023, and LithiumBank has yet to publish pilot performance data. Whether Alberta's oilfield brine can deliver battery-grade lithium at a viable commercial scale is the question this sampling campaign was designed to answer. The labs will have the first word.
